Very good network forensics text. It contains no heads on activities, otherwise 5 stars.
At just over 300 pages, this is a densely-packed tour-de-force through the land of networking security and forensics, covering a wide range of key topics. It's written in a way to allow you to test out the ideas at the command line, but doesn't include endless screenshots, hand-holding or icons with definitions. It's targeted at the reader with an intermediate knowledge of how system work (novices will definitely get lost quickly) and clearly aims to discuss the most important subjects to point you in the right direction for further discovery.Networking isn't my background but I was interested in learning more this area and found the writing style was succinct, humorous in places, and no-nonsense in its delivery. Clearly the author has an encyclopedic understanding in this field and has written what I'm sure will quickly become required reading for an academic or certification courses. While the writing is dense, it's definitely not dull, though I found one chapter a week the right pace for fully absorbing the concepts presented.
Ric Messier is fairly well known in computer forensic circles. He was Director for Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics at Champlain College, one of the first if not the first accredited colleges to offer degrees in computer forensics. He is currently, according to the book, Director for Cyber Academic Programs at Circadence. This is a fairly short book a about 300 pages, but very dense. I would not recommend it to a total neophyte in computer forensics. Mr. Messier takes a step-by-step approach beginning with the basics of networks and networking. Messier presents a lot of information, but he writes well and while I wouldn’t describe it as leisure reading, it is interesting and informative. There are a number of real-time examples provided that can be done by the reader using open source or otherwise free tools. There are 12 chapters. For a person with limited networking experience, I would suspect it will take about a week of close reading and hands-on work to get through each chapter. This is commensurate with the complexity of the subject. Overall, if you have an interest in network forensics, this is a good place to start and, in fact, is one of the very few comprehensive resources available.Jerry
